The nature of Progressive swim lessons is such that it is acceptable – and common – for swimming students to repeat levels until they have demonstrated sufficient proficiency in all skills. The classes work together, gradually increasing in difficulty and endurance, to help swimmers progress at their own level. Please refer to the class descriptions in order to decide which class is best for your children.

Parent and Child Classes

30 minutes in length

Water enrichment classes for child and parent to enjoy together. This is a water acclimation class that introduces children to basic skills. Parents learn how to handle their child in water and receive water safety tips. Songs, games, and toys are used to build confidence and trust in the water.

Shrimp/Kippers

6 months-2 years old

Inia/Perch

Preschool Program

30 minutes in length

Pike

This class is designed for new swimmers and helps children develop safe pool behavior and adjust to the water. The class teaches basic skills such as paddle stroke, kicking, blowing bubbles, and front and back float.

Eel

This class is designed to help young swimmers who are comfortable in the water to gain more independence. As well as learning water safety, children develop the front and back paddle stoke, kicking, breath control, and floating.

Ray

At this level, children review water and safety and refine the strokes learned in the previous classes and are introduced to surface diving and treading water. To move on to the next level, children should be able to swim on their own for 20 feet.

Starfish

The last level in the preschool program, Starfish focuses on refining strokes and building endurance. All previous skills are reviewed.

Youth Program

45 minutes in length

At least 6 years old

Polliwog

This class is the beginning level for school-aged children. It introduces children to the water and teaches water safety, breath control, the front, side and back paddle, kicking, and floating.

Guppy

A step up from Polliwog, the Guppy class reinforces water safety and works on front, side, and back strokes independent of flotation aids. Children practice breath control and floating and are taught diving skills and treading water.

Minnow

All previous skills are reviewed in this class. Children practice the front crawl with rhythmic breathing and continue to practice elementary backstroke and back crawl. The sidestroke and breaststroke kicks are introduced. All strokes must be performed proficiently for 25 yards to pass this level.

Fish

This class focuses on refining strokes and building endurance. The butterfly stroke is introduced using fins. By the end of the level, swimmers must float for at least 6 minutes and tread water for 3 minutes and swim each stroke (except butterfly) for 50 yards.

Flying Fish

A continuation from the previous class, Flying Fish emphasizes endurance and introduces flip turns. Swimmers must swim 100 yards of each stroke (except butterfly) to pass this class.
